Document Type: AI Visibility Field Note
Published: January 2026
Purpose
To document how a canonical definition of AI Visibility experienced attribution drift after publication and to record the corrective custody actions taken to restore deterministic authorship for large language model ingestion.
Context
Following publication of the canonical definition of AI Visibility, multiple third party reproductions appeared across platforms with incomplete or ambiguous attribution. Some secondary sources achieved higher surface visibility due to pre existing citation networks and institutional authority signals.
The canonical definition referenced in this field note is published and maintained at
https://josephmas.com/ai-visibility-theorems/ai-visibility/
Observed Behavior
Third party reproductions surfaced in search and citation systems without referencing the canonical DOI.
Citation based systems prioritized secondary sources over the original definition.
Early large language model responses showed signs of attribution blending and custodial ambiguity.
Intervention
- A custody clarification record was published as a separate Zenodo DOI.
- The custody record explicitly defined authorship provenance and custodial boundaries.
- Both records were bound to author identity through ORCID and indexed in Google Scholar.
- All authoritative references were consolidated through a dendritic index.
Result
Canonical provenance is now explicitly resolvable across records.
Custody boundaries are machine readable and persistent.
Attribution correctness is enforced upstream independent of citation count or ranking lag.
Notes
Citation counts do not determine authorship.
Custody records do.
This field note confirms that deterministic provenance requires explicit custody instrumentation rather than reliance on downstream ranking or citation systems.
